Where's hot in February?

With the winter showing no signs of releasing its icy grip on the UK, luckily there are lots of places offering guaranteed sunshine. If you're escaping for the half term holidays or planning a romantic break for Valentine's Day but don't want to travel too far, then the Canary Islands are a good bet close to home, as is Egypt. But if you want to leave the cold temperatures of the UK far behind, jet over to Florida, South Africa or the Gulf States. See more recommendations below.

Bring your party clothes - this is the height of fiesta time in Lanzarote. Two of the biggest events are the week-long Arrecife Carnival in the middle of February and the Puerto del Carmen Carnival at the end. Think floats, fireworks, music and, err, burying a giant sardine on the beach. It's hot in the day but gets chilly at night, so make sure you pack something warm for going out. This is also a good time to visit the lava fields of Timanfaya National Park, the site of an active volcano. Don't worry, it last erupted in 1730.

This is the best time to visit Qatar - it's nice and warm, without being humid. You'll feel a warm Gulf breeze strolling down the Corniche promenade in Doha, where you can also see some of the city's best landmarks. In mid-February the six-stage Tour of Qatar attracts the cream of cycling, and you can watch the competitors battle the winds in their multi-coloured jerseys, racing against the desert backdrop. Alternatively, opt for four wheels and see the latest classic cars and supercars at the five-day Qatar Motor Show.

February is the driest month of the year in Miami. Lots of the city's showpiece events are held then, so if you can tear yourself away from the beach, the Miami International Boat Show will have everything from super yachts to family skiffs to look at. The annual South Beach Food and Wine Festival is four days of pure indulgence with tastings, demonstrations and culinary activities. Or head to Coconut Grove Arts Festival, which has live bands performing as well as the chance to see fine art exhibits.
