October in Crete
It's still warm enough to swim and sunbathe here in October. For tropical lounging go to palm tree lined Váï beach, which was where the iconic 1970s Bounty chocolate bar ad was filmed. Myrtos beach in the south is protected from the wind and has plenty of tavernas to keep you fed and watered. With the weather feeling a little cooler, hike through the Samaria Gorge National Park and see the intriguing rock formations and canyons. October in Malaysia
This is the end of the high tourist season in Malaysia. The weather will be up in the 30s, and the sea temperature remains high, but there is a chance of rain. For white, sandy, sunny beaches head west to Penang or Pangkor islands. Alternatively, nip over to the capital Kuala Lumpur for a few days. October in Sri Lanka
Visit the east coast early in the month, as it'll be protected from the monsoon weather in the southwest. Either Kalkudah or Passekudah are worth a trip for outstanding, unspoilt and sandy beaches. Sri Lanka is rightly famous for its wildlife, so take a safari round the Yala National Park and try and spot Elephants, Leopards and Water Buffalo.
